The exquisitely crafted curios and scholarly items depicted on and around a hardwood table, many of which carry auspicious associations, reflect the taste of an urban population that had been expanding since the late Ming dynasty (1368–1644). Antiques were treasured not only for their intrinsic value but also as status symbols.
