Like a coquette before her mirror, the countess tries out positions in front of the camera. Modulating her gaze and adopting various poses, she attempts to counter the stiffness of expression brought on by the two or three seconds of exposure time. These ten photographs, made during two sittings, strive for the spontaneity of the snapshot, a process that would not appear until late 1880's.
