The wide brow, upswept hair, and prominent chignon identify the figure as Picasso's companion Fernande Olivier, although her features were no more than a pretext for willful distortion and experimentation. This drawing is a close-up of the head of a full-length standing nude (1908-9, Musée National Picasso, Paris), which Picasso made for an unrealized painting. The pose-one that Cézanne had also adopted in his female bathers-derives from Michelangelo's "Dying Slave" at the Musée du Louvre.
