  • Description

    Attributed to the Diosphos Painter
Obverse: Hypnos (Sleep) and Thanatos (Death) carry Sarpedon, a son of Zeus, to his homeland, Lycia

Reverse: Eos (Dawn) carries her son Memnon to his kingdom in Ethiopia

The scenes on this jar show two deceased heroes of the Trojan War being lifted from the battlefield. Hypnos and his brother Thanatos are shown without their wings, suggesting that the scene
may instead represent the Greek heroes Menelaos and Meriones carrying the body of Patroklos, the friend of Achilles, whose funeral games end Homer's Iliad. The small, armed winged figure at center moving up from the body may represent the psyche athanatos (immortal soul) of the deceased.
