Adonis, a beautiful boy loved by Aphrodite, met an untimely death. The cult of the dying god was celebrated exclusively by women. At the Athenian festival of the Adonia, pots filled with quickly germinating seeds were placed on flat rooftops then carried, along with a statuette of the god, and thrown into the sea amid loud lamentation. Here, between seated figures who are probably Adonis and Aphrodite, a woman carrying a pot of earth, which she receives from Eros, climbs a ladder to the roof.
