The Adoration of the Shepherds

El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) Greek

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 619

This late Adoration of the Shepherds is closely related to El Greco’s version in the Colegio del Patriarca, Valencia, engraved in 1605. Our picture, though probably painted with an assistant, is superior in execution and stylistically more advanced, with its ethereal figures, emotional mood, and overall visionary effect. Setting Nativity scenes at night reflects a new emphasis on the concept of Revelation, here conveyed by light emanating solely from the Christ child and from an angel in the background above a shepherd and his flock.
