One can only guess at the strange psychosexual narrative that lay behind the making of this image and others in a private album that featured a small cast of characters repeatedly bound, beheaded, or burned at the stake, sometimes at the hands of their own doppelgangers.
There is a photocollage on the verso of this image which incorporates many of the same figures and pictorial elements.

According to the vendor, this photocollage came from an album found in Lyon, France. See bibliography for related images.
