Scenes from the Life of Saint Augustine of Hippo

Master of Saint Augustine Netherlandish

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 305

This painting was the central panel of a triptych dedicated to Saint Augustine. The composition is divided into five scenes: in the center, Saint Augustine is consecrated bishop of Hippo; in the upper left, he is ordained; in the lower left, he preaches while his mother, Monica, says the rosary; in the upper right, he converses with a boy who says that filling a hole in the sand with the sea is no more difficult than explaining the trinity; and in the lower right, he preaches. Note the variety of altar implements and ecclesiastical vestments and regalia depicted in this work. Five rings are visible on Saint Augustine's gloved right hand. The ring on the fourth finger is likely an episcopal ring, worn as a sign of the bishop's betrothal to the church. Additional rings were often worn above this one to ensure it remained on the finger.
