Reliquary Casket with Scenes from the Martyrdom of Saint Thomas Becket

British

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 304

This portable reliquary contained blood of Saint Thomas Becket, who was assassinated at Canterbury Cathedral by King Henry II's men on December 29, 1170. The exceptional, sensitive quality of the engraved scenes of his death, burial, and soul held by an angel make this casket a masterpiece of English art circa 1200.
