From Sarajevo to Vienna: The Unknown Glory of the Habsburgs

Dragons Bridge, Ljubljana, Slovenia

June 20–30, 2014

Discover Sarajevo's Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian influences, and visit the spot at the Latin Bridge where Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated, setting off the chain of events that led to World War I. Then fly to Zagreb, Croatia, known as "little Vienna." Tour the impressive medieval castle of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and continue to picturesque Bled for a boat ride to Slovenia's only island. Stroll through historic Graz, Austria, site of a Habsburg imperial residence. Continue to Vienna to enjoy a private behind-the-scenes tour at the newly restored city Palace, Liechtenstein. You may also wish to attend an optional gala evening at the Fête Impériale—the city's newest Summer Ball of the Spanish Riding School. Optional Dubrovnik, Mostar, and Sarajevo prelude.

Traveling with You: Wolfram Koeppe, Marina Kellen French Curator in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts. Listen to Wolfram reflect on the mystical, restorative powers of viewing art in his Connections episode, "After Hours," and explore his 82nd & Fifth episode, "Curls," about an intriguing sculpture of Alexander Danilovich Menshikov by an unknown artist.
