The Sketch

Throughout history and across media, artists have used sketching for different purposes. Examine how Old Master painters used drawing to plan paintings, and see how Abstract Expressionist artists such as Willem de Kooning sketched to explore the possibilities of gesture, space, and color. Then discover how sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini used drawings and clay sketches as part of his working process. This three-session course (October 11, 18, and 25) meets in the Met's classrooms and galleries.

Session 1—Seeing through Paintings
Explore the role of the sketch as a means for the painter to refine a composition, either in preparation for the work or during the process of painting.

Session 2—The Abstract Expressionist Sketch
Examine the role of sketching in an artistic movement where its use is least expected: Abstract Expressionism.

Session 3—Fashioning Sculpture
Discover the role of drawings and clay sketches in the making of sculpture in Renaissance Italy, with a particular emphasis on Gian Lorenzo Bernini's unique approach to modeling clay.

Space is limited. Purchase tickets below or at the Great Hall box office. Registration ends at 12:00 p.m. on the first day of the course. For more information, call 212-570-3961.
