Short Course

Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity

Investigate the relationship between fashion and art from the 1860s to 1880s, when Paris emerged as the world's style capital. This three-session course (March 7, 14, and 21) meets in the Met's classrooms and galleries and is offered again in April.

Session 1—Painting Modern Life
Focus on Impressionist painters' interest in capturing modern life and fleeting moments, as seen through the lens of French writer Charles Baudelaire's influential essay The Painter of Modern Life, published in 1863.

Session 2—Plein-Air Painting
Join a paintings conservator and an art historian to gain insight into the materials and techniques used by the Impressionists to paint outdoors.

Session 3—Fashion and Modernity
Consider the body-sculpting corset, the impractical crinoline and bustle, and candy-colored fashion plates to learn what nineteenth-century costumes reveal about modernity in the Impressionist era.

Space is limited. Purchase tickets below or at the Great Hall box office. Registration ends at noon on the day before the first session. For more information, call 212-570-3961.

This program is held in conjunction with the exhibition Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity.
