Friday Evening Gallery Event—Mirror, Mirror: The Art of Vanity

George Barbier, "Le bonheur du jour; ou, Les graces a la mode"

What would it be like to explore the Met's galleries and think about scent, hairstyles, facial hair, and the art of grooming? Join us for an evening of beauty and glamour inspired by the exhibition Metropolitan Vanities: The History of the Dressing Table, and choose among interactive experiences with art in the collections led by experts.

  • Join design historian Caroline Hannah to explore dressing tables, perfume bottles, cosmetic jars, hand mirrors, and comb and brush sets from ancient to modern times in the Metropolitan Vanities exhibition.
  • How did the ancient Romans create the intricate hairdos depicted in their portrait sculptures? Join hair archaeologist Janet Stephens to learn about the tools and techniques they used and relate these to works in the collection.

  • Encounter a mustachioed sculpture of Napoléon III and join Russell Manley, owner of Tommy Guns Salon, for a conversation and exploration of men's grooming tools and trends from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

  • Explore the decadence of the eighteenth-century vanity through art and fragrance with Met educator Alice Schwarz and perfumer Alexis Karl.

  • Join talented art instructors in the Modern and Contemporary galleries to explore the human face in all its detail through informal sketching fun in Drop-in Drawing.

  • Sip a cocktail inspired by Metropolitan Vanities in the Petrie Court Café.
