Figure Sculpting: Essential Forms in Clay

Explore the structure and dynamics of form that lie at the foundation of all figure sculpture, both realistic and abstract. In this two-part workshop (April 26 and 27), artist and sculptor Jeff Hesser guides you in examining works in the exhibition The Passions of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, where you will uncover Carpeaux's process for creating expressive and life-like figures. After sketching from close observation in the galleries, learn to use your drawings as a reference, work from a live model, and experience a range of techniques and tools for creating forms from clay. Create a series of sketches and a full-figure clay sculpture by the end of the course.

This workshop meets in the Met's galleries and studios. Participants must be 18 or older. All levels welcome. Space is limited. Purchase tickets below or at the Great Hall box office. Registration ends at noon on the Tuesday before the first day of the course.
