Becoming a Member or Renewing an Existing Membership

  1. How can I renew my Membership?

    Renewing your Membership is easy! For fastest service, renew online. We also offer a convenient automatic renewal option that renews your Membership at the same time every year. You can opt out at any time.

    You can also renew at any Membership Desk in the Museum or at any Met Store location, by calling the Membership Department at 212-570-3753, or by mailing your check or credit card payment to:

  2. Where can I find my Membership ID number?

    Your Membership ID number is located on the back of your permanent Membership card.

  3. How can I check if my Membership is still valid?

    Memberships are activated on the date of purchase and are valid for one year. Your Membership expiration date is located on the back of your permanent Membership card.

    If you do not have your Membership card and would like to verify your Membership, please email your full name and address to membership@metmuseum.org.

  4. How can I update my mailing address or contact information?

    Please email your new contact information to membership@metmuseum.org and we will update our records.

  5. Is my Membership tax deductible? How can I request a tax receipt for my Membership?

    A portion of each Membership contribution is tax deductible. See the Membership form for the tax-deductible portion of each Membership level.

    If you have misplaced your tax-acknowledgement letter, please email membership@metmuseum.org to request a duplicate copy. Please include your Membership ID number, full name, mailing address, and any information about the payment in question.

  6. I am interested in upgrading my Membership to a higher level. How should I do this?

    To increase your Membership support at any time, please contact the Membership Department at 212-570-3753 or visit any Membership Desk in the Museum.

  7. I have already renewed my Membership. Why am I still receiving renewal notices in the mail?

    Due to processing time, your payment and renewal notice may have crossed paths in the mail. To confirm that we have received your Membership payment, please email membership@metmuseum.org. Please disregard any notices you receive after your payment has been submitted.

  8. Can I purchase a Membership as a gift?

    Membership at the Met makes the perfect gift for all occasions! For fastest service, purchase a gift Membership online.

    The form will ask you for the recipient's contact information first, followed by your billing information. If you wish to have the recipient's Membership card(s) mailed to you, please select this option on the checkout form:

    You may also purchase a gift Membership at any Membership Desk in the Museum or at any Met Store location, or by calling the Membership Department at 212-570-3753. Please note that we are unable to include a personalized message to the recipient.

  9. Does the Museum offer a student or senior Membership?

    At this time, we do not offer student or senior Memberships.

  10. My company has a matching gift program. Is the Met eligible to receive matching gifts?

    The Museum is eligible to receive matching gifts for the Annual Appeal, which supports general operating expenses. Annual Appeal donations are considered fully tax deductible and are a great way to make your matching gift contribution go further. Please contact your company's human resources department to find out if your employer participates in this program.

    Please note that matching gifts may not be applied to Membership payments.

  11. Can I purchase a Membership through my donor-advised fund?

    Please check with your donor-advised fund before initiating payment, as Memberships may not be eligible for purchase through your fund.


Membership Cards

  1. When will I receive my Membership card(s)? Can I visit the Museum without my card?

    You will receive your Membership card(s) by mail within ten to fourteen business days of purchasing your Membership. If you come to the Museum without your card, please check in at one of the Membership Desks with a photo ID to receive a temporary card that will entitle you to all of the benefits of your Membership for that day. If you purchased your Membership online, please present your email confirmation.

  2. I have lost or misplaced my Membership card. How can I request a replacement?

    If you have lost or misplaced your permanent Membership card, you may request a duplicate card by sending your Membership ID number, full name, and address to membership@metmuseum.org. Please note that there is a $5.00 fee for replacement cards that covers printing, processing, and mailing costs.

  3. Can I designate a second Membership cardholder?

    Members beginning at the Family/Dual ($200) level may designate a second Membership cardholder at the time of purchase. If you would like the second card to read "Guest of [Member Name]," please leave the second cardholder field blank.

    To add or change the secondary cardholder name, please email membership@metmuseum.org with your Membership ID number, full name, and address.

  4. Can I give my Membership card to someone else to use?

    Membership cards are not transferable. For information on bringing guests to the Museum, please see the Member Benefits section below.


Member Benefits

  1. Do Members get free admission? How many guests may I bring for free to the Museum?

    Members at all levels receive free unlimited admission to the Main Building and The Cloisters museum and gardens, the branch of the Museum in northern Manhattan devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe. Please see the admissions policy for each Membership level below.

    Additional guests are asked to make an admissions contribution at our Admissions or Membership Desks.

  2. Do I need tickets to view special exhibitions?

    Tickets are not required to view any of the Museum's exhibitions, so you may visit them for free as often as you like.

  3. Do I receive Museum discounts with my Membership?

    Members receive a 10% discount in The Met Store, plus seasonal Double Discounts. Discounts are also available on Audio Guides and Museum parking.

  4. What are Member previews for special exhibitions and how do I attend? How many guests may I bring?

    Member previews are exclusive opportunities to view select special exhibitions before they open to the public. Invitations to previews are mailed to Members beginning at the Individual ($100) level. Associate ($60) and Friend ($275) Members, who live more than two hundred miles outside of New York City, receive email invitations to previews.

    To attend an exhibition preview, eligible Members should present their printed invitation or Membership card at the entrance to the exhibition. Reservations are not necessary. For Individual ($100) and Family/Dual ($200) Members, each invitation admits two. For Sustaining ($550) and Supporting ($1,200 to $20,000) Members, each invitation admits four. Due to capacity limitations in the galleries, we regret that additional guests cannot be accommodated.

    Please note that Member previews are not a benefit of the Met Net ($70) level.

  5. What are Member evening receptions for special exhibitions and how do I attend? How many guests may I bring?

    Members beginning at the Sustaining ($550) level receive invitations for evening receptions and private viewings of select special exhibitions. Each invitation admits two, and reservations are required; to reserve, please send an email to the address listed in the printed invitation. If you have lost or misplaced your invitation, simply present your valid Membership card at the check-in desk on the evening of the event.

  6. The company I work for is a Corporate Patron. Can I attend Member previews and evening receptions for special exhibitions?

    Member previews and evening receptions are not a benefit to employees of Corporate Patrons. You must be a Member beginning at the Individual ($100) level to attend Member previews and beginning at the Sustaining ($550) level to attend evening receptions.

  7. How can I sign up to receive Membership emails?

    To receive emails from the Membership Department, please email your Membership ID number, full name, and preferred email address to membership@metmuseum.org. This is best way to stay informed and receive advance notice of exhibitions, programs, events, and special offers.

  8. What is the Members Calendar? Do I receive it with my Membership?

    The quarterly Members Calendar includes information on upcoming Members-only events, exhibition openings, programs, and tours. The Calendar is mailed automatically to Members beginning at the Individual ($100) level, as well as to Members at the Associate ($60) and Friend ($275) levels.

  9. How may I register for the free Members-only curatorial lectures?

    Members beginning at the Family/Dual ($200) level are invited to attend Members-only curatorial lectures about current exhibitions. Advance registration is not required. Simply present your valid Membership card at the entrance to the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium.

  10. Are there any special Membership groups at the Met for young professionals?

    The Museum offers two groups dedicated to the interests of our young supporters:

    Young Members
    Members at all levels, between the ages of 21 and 35, are eligible to participate in the Young Members program at no additional cost. Young Members are invited to special events throughout the year, including the annual Young Members Party. To participate, please email your Membership ID number, full name, and address to youngmembers@metmuseum.org.

    The Apollo Circle (from $1,200)
    The Apollo Circle is a special Membership group for individuals ages 21 to 39. Named after the Greek god of youth, the arts, culture, and music, The Apollo Circle engages its Members in a variety of educational and social activities and provides incomparable insights into the Museum's collections and exhibitions. Proceeds support The Apollo Circle Fund for Art Conservation.

  11. What areas of the Museum are available exclusively for Members?

    We are pleased to offer three exclusive locations for Members to enjoy during their visit:

    The Members Dining Room offers contemporary American cuisine in an elegant setting with expansive views of Central Park. Open to all Members.

    The Balcony Lounge is a sophisticated space adjacent to the Great Hall Balcony that offers a light menu, complimentary reading materials, and Wi-Fi. Open to Friend ($275), Sustaining ($550), and Supporting ($1,200 to $20,000) Members.

    The Patrons Lounge is a quiet, art-filled space offering panoramic views of Central Park and a light menu. Open to Members beginning at the Sponsor ($4,500) level.

  12. Do I receive reciprocal membership privileges at other museums with my Membership?

    Members beginning at the Sustaining ($550) level receive privileges at fifteen other institutions. Present the Membership card issued to you by the Metropolitan Museum to receive these benefits. Learn more about reciprocal membership.
