July 2–November 29, 2005

The evolution of Japanese arts is explored through this selection of works chosen from the Museum's permanent collection. The objects on view include prehistoric pottery; Buddhist and Shinto sculpture painting; ink monochrome painting; screens from the famous Ryoanji temple, and by celebrated Rinpa masters; Ryukyu lacquerware on loan from the Florence and Herbert Irving collection; woodblock prints by nineteenth-century masters; and an assemblage of recently acquired contemporary ceramics.
