Klee Abstract

September 5–December 7, 2003

From 1915 on, the visible world ceased to inspire Paul Klee. The artist had written earlier that it "bored" him "to copy nature." Drawing his subjects from the imagination, past experience, and his reaction to the world around him, he devised his own universe of abstracted signs and merry symbols. He also created completely abstract compositions, and a selection of these works, some thirty paintings and watercolors from the Berggruen Klee Collection, are shown.
