The Enchanting Douro River aboard AmaVida

Sunrise over Old Oporto, Portugal

May 2–14, 2014

In Lisbon view the extraordinary collections of the Tile Museum and the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, and enjoy lunch at the magnificent Palácio da Pena. Following two days in Oporto, embark on a leisurely cruise through Portugal's Douro River Valley. Call at Entre-os-Rios to visit a manor house and sample its young "green" wine. In Caldas de Aregos, explore the fourteenth-century Alpendurada Monastery. From Régua, travel to Lamego to admire the hilltop pilgrimage church Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. Step ashore in Pinhão for an excursion to the Baroque manor house of Mateus and its equally fantastic gardens. Then sail across the Spanish border to disembark in Vega de Terrón and visit Salamanca en route to Madrid. Optional Madrid postlude.

Traveling with You: Daniëlle O. Kisluk-Grosheide, curator in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts. Listen to Daniëlle muse on the relationship she has with trees in her Connections episode, "Trees," and explore her 82nd & Fifth episode, "Identity," about a mechanical table by the cabinetmaker Jean-François Oeben.
