This gallery exhibits works that range in date from several millennia B.C.E., such as the beautifully shaped stone tools known as bannerstones, to 1970s-era tobacco bags.
The objects illustrate a wide variety of cultural backgrounds, artistic styles, and functional purposes, and they come from equally diverse areas on the North American continent—wood sculpture from the North Pacific Coast, ivory carvings from the Arctic, and works of animal hide from the Great Plains, for example. A large Northwest Coast whale mask, which would have been transformed by the manipulations of the wearer into a moving, swimming leviathan, dominates this space.
