Relief-carved solid book

On View Gallery Watson Library

Solid books of various materials have been made historically as relics, charms, mementos, props, stand-ins for real books, and sculpture. This is simply a beautiful book with no apparent use.

It is carved in relief, in the style of an elaborate round-back leather binding, like albums and bibles of the period, with sculpted boards, raised bands and foredge clasp.
