Mieko (Chieko) Shiomi Japanese

Not on view

In the late 1960s, Japanese artist Mieko Shiomi initiated a series of works that she called “spatial poems,” which essentially were created through crowd-sourcing: Shiomi provided a prompt and solicited responses from friends, fellow artists, and their extended networks. For this work, Shiomi focused on the subject of falling. Participants were invited to create or observe actions involving objects or living things falling through space, to record those actions in writing, and then to share them with Shiomi by mail.
