This collaboration between the artist, El Lissitzky, and poet, Vladimir Mayakovsky, was recognized internationally as a masterwork of Constructivist book design almost immediately upon publication. The book offers thirteen of Mayakovsky’s most popular poems, including a number with revolutionary themes such as “Left March” and “The Third International.” The design reflects the volume’s intended purpose and alternate title translation: “for reading aloud.” The address book-like thumb-tabs and icons are helpful aids to someone standing before a crowd, trying to find the next poem to recite.
