Tuttle creates art that is both nuanced and precise, with seemingly simple elements revealing subtle contrasts and remarkable complexity. He frequently uses unconventional methods and materials to conceive poetic constructions that highlight issues of vulnerability, engagement, and reflection. This work is drawn from the series Cloth—a set of sixteen vibrantly colored prints, each of which is based on a different fabric that Tuttle cut into distinct shapes, manipulated, and placed into contact with the print. With their layered washes of color, patterns, and designs, these dynamic compositions show Tuttle’s experimentation with technique, modes of perception, and materiality. The subtitle Label, which the artist inscribed at the bottom center of each print, questions the relationship between label and image and the convention of labeling itself.
