Print recording deeds of the Paparone Family

Anonymous, Italian, 17th century Italian

Not on view

This print consists of two parts. At top it shows the figures of two knights identified as the Roman consul Scotto Paparone and his son Giovanni. This image reproduces the central slab of the famous mosaic pavement of the Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, which was donated to the church by Scotto and Giovanni. In addition, the print also reproduces the text found on marble plaque in the church of San Pantaleo which attributes the reconstruction of the church to Scotto Paparone's wife, Aldruda. The information may have been collected by Fabrizio Guastaferri, a seventeenth-century erudite active in Rome, who is also mentioned on the print.
