Flemish Grotesque with a Fantastic Cart pulled by Two Bulls

Cornelis Bos Netherlandish

Not on view

Design for a frieze with a fantastic cart pulled by two bulls. The design reflects the characteristic style of grotesques as developed in the Southern Netherlands in the second quarter of the sixteenth century. While influenced by Italian ornament and the decorative scheme developed by the French Royal Castle at Fontainebleau, the Flemish grotesques had their own unique vocabulary consisting of strapwork constructions inhabited by fantastical creatures.
