Lozi peoples

Not on view

Renowned for the caliber of their decorative arts, the production of crafts for both local and foreign consumption has been a major focus of the Lozi economy since the early twentieth century. Among these are the baskets that women tightly weave from makenge root. Originally produced to store valuables, over the last century those created entirely for display have increasingly featured elaborate decoration and new formats. The procession of animals and human forms depicted around the perimeter and lid of this example suggests an early instance of the mastery of representational motifs favored by a Western clientele.
