Wenceslaus Hollar was one of the most important printmakers of the seventeenth century. His technical virtuosity and his ability to render things, places, and people with astonishing detail and truthfulness has been highly regarded since his lifetime.
Hollar created this etching as one of several illustrations to Nicholas Upton's De Studio militari (London, 1654), a work that had originally appeared before 1446 in the form of an illuminated manuscript.
