Buddha Preaching

Central Myanmar

Not on view

This Buddha is seated in a meditation posture, his hands raised before him in a gesture evoking the First Sermon (dharmachakramudra). A Pyu inscription engraved around the base is as yet unread but may be assigned paleographically to the eighth century. This sculpture’s accidental recovery in the vicinity of the new Myanmar capital of Nay Pyi Taw underscores the Pyu ancestry of the region.
