Children playing in a garden: A dog attacks the pant leg of young boy (dressed in Civil War era Zouave uniform) who runs towards a young girl wearing a pink dress; another boy holding a bayonet-tipped rifle pokes the weapon at the dog's mouth to try to loosen its grip. Behind the boy with the rifle, another boy holding a small United States flag laughs at the scene, while to the left of him, a younger girl cowers behind the porch railing. At right, a wooden dog house is backed up against a wooden wall, upon which hangs a leafy vine and a watering can.
