Hand-colored engraving with design for the costume of a Merveilleuse, part of the book "Incroyables et Merveilleuses," with 33 costume plates designed by Horace Vernet and engraved by Georges Jacques Gatine, published ca. 1815 in Paris. The costume in this plate consists of a white tulle cornet with ruffled borders, worn under a black velvet top hat decorated with large, white feathers and a black bow at the front, a long, black velvet empire dress with white lace collar with ruffles on the border, and long, wide, white sleeves with puffed vertical stripes, and with black puffed horizontal stripes and fringes at the bottom, and black flat boots.
