Two designs for brooches with ribbons and stones

F. Mellerio Borgnis

Not on view

Drawing with two designs for brooches, part of an album of drawings in pen and ink of designs for jewelry in the style of the French School of the 19th century, designed for the French jewelry house Mellerio-Borgnis. The first design consists of a scrolling gold ribbon with green strips in the middle and with scattered round pearls, with three rings, one under the other, of decreasing size, each with a stylized, green leaf with a pearl on the bottom, from which hang strips of gold that end in a round pearl. The second design consists of three oval cabochon stones of red color, framed by thin, gold strips with scrolling branches, with a hanging teardrop cabochon stone of red color at the end, all of them separated by green ribbon bows, from which hang more oval and teardrop-shaped cabochon stones of red color to the sides of the strip in the middle. The green areas of the designs might have been achieved using enamel or small, green (semi-) precious stones in the manufactured jewel; the red stones in the second design might have been corals, rubies, colored glass, or even enamel. The designs are drawn in two different sheets of paper, which are pasted to the same page of the album.
