"Kaléidoscope: Ornements Abstraits"; Plate 2, Six Abstract Design Motifs

This book, titled "Kaléidoscope: Ornements Abstraits" (Kaleidoscope: Abstract Ornaments), is bound on dark blue linen boards and contains a title page and 20 plates (numbered 1-20) presenting a total of 87 designs for textiles, in the style of Art Deco. Having its peak during the "Roaring Twenties" (second half of the 1920s) and the Depression years of the 1930s, the eclecticism of Art Deco was permeated by both traditional European design traditions and contemporary avant-garde. The designs presented in this book contain colorful, abstract motifs, which evoke, with their fragmented vocabulary, the dynamism of modern culture that was common of Art Deco.

This plate presents six designs for textiles with abstract motifs, organized in three rows, each with two horizontal rectangles containing the designs. The first design contains a scalloped pattern executed with aquamarine, outlined with dark blue, and decorated with white curving lines, over a background with vertical stripes colored with pink, aquamarine, and two shades of blue. The second design is made up of a checked pattern with zig-zagging lines, triangles and semi-circles, colored with red, orange, green, purple, blue and white. The third design is made up of a horizontal zig-zagging line colored with olive green, tan and aquamarine, silver triangles with an L-shaped frame executed with tan color, over which stand abstract motifs with undulating borders, colored with aquamarine and olive green, and decorated with an undulating shape executed in silver, over a semi-abstract striped pattern made up of elongated white scales, with one straight side and a curving line, over a blue ground. The fourth design is made up of abstract white seals and curving shapes colored with gray, white, and orange, over a pattern of curved shapes colored with two shades of green and gray and scattered pink circles. The fifth design is made up of triangles, circles and semi-circles, colored with green, red, white, and two shades of purple, and the sixth design is made up of a variety of curved shapes and semi-circles, colored with aquamarine, brown, purple, orange and blue over a white ground.
