Mise-en-carte and Sample for a Taffeta Rayé Broché with Vertical Stripes with Garlands and Bundles with Flowers and Leaves

Anonymous, French, 18th century French

Not on view

Mise-en-carte (weaving pattern) for a "taffeta rayé broché" (a), from the late-18th century, with design motifs typical of the time of Louis XVI, when textiles were decorated with colorful garlands of flowers and leaves, as well as other naturalistic motifs and garden trophies. This design contains vertical stripes with floral motifs over a checked background. The floral motifs in the stripes alternate between thin undulating garlands with green leaves and small pink flower buds, and small bundles with green branches with leaves and pink flowers and flower buds and small scattered pink flower buds on green stems with leaves. The checked pattern on the back is rendered with blue.

Placed below the mise-en-carte is a fabric sample (b) with a fragment of what would have been the finished textile: the flowers are all executed with shades of pink and the leaves with shades of green, and the checked pattern is executed with glossy threads of cream color on the matte base of the textile. The stripes, unlike the mise-en-carte design, are bordered by two thin lines, executed in soft pink, on each side.
