Cup and Saucer (tasse litron)

Manufactory Sèvres Manufactory French
Decorated by Nicolas Pierre Pithou the Younger French
Jean-Baptiste-Etienne-Nicolas Noualhier

Not on view

This cup shows cameos of the three Mysore ambassadors based on a gouache by Charles Eloi Asselin, and its saucer features hookahs and turbans. Unlike the gifts Sèvres produced for the Mysore embassy, items made for the French market were not subject to the religious proscription against figurative images. At least four versions of these cups and saucers were produced, three of which were acquired by members of the court.
