Hail America

Joseph Pennell American

Not on view

Pennell, a Philadelphia-born Quaker, spent the first two decades of his career abroad, living primarily in London, where he became a close associate of Whistler. Here, the artist manipulates mezzotint's dramatic potential to represent the Statue of Liberty backlit by the sun breaking through clouds, Manhattan's skyline seen in the distance. He printed about seventy proofs.
