Landseer based this etching on a picture he exhibited in 1833, his first of many compositions devoted to red deer shown in the Scottish Highlands. Two deehounds bring down a stag in a fast-flowing mountain stream. One dog is wounded and the other has fastened onto the deer's ear. This etching probably comes from a set of seventeen that E. Gambart & Co. initially published in the 1820s then reissued in 1848. Born in Belgium, Ernest Gambart moved to Paris and then London. He soon established his own publishing house and dealership, developing fruitful relationships with many leading artists of the Victorian era and became a British citizen in 1846.
