Willmore's engraving reproduces an 1847 painting by Landseer (Royal Collection) that Queen Victoria commissioned as a Christmas present for Prince Albert. The image commemorates the royal family's first visit to the Scottish highlands that summer, when they stayed at the Duke of Abercorn's estate Ardverikie. Accompanied by her two eldest children, the queen sketches the dramatic landscape, and pauses to greet a ghillie who leads a pony loaded down with a stag shot by Prince Albert. Dressed in a kilt, the Prince of Wales points admiringly towards the animal.
