The Sentinel
Not on view
A large dog lies across the step of an open doorway guarding his owner's cloak, hat and cane and a lapdog lying on a table behind. A small dog outside the door barks at the large one. The work portrays Lion and Dash, a St. Bernard and spaniel belonging to the Duke and Duchess of Beaufort, and is based on a painting that Landseer exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1840 as "The Watchful Sentinel."
