Cabinet

Herts Brothers American

Not on view

Cabinetmakers Isaac and Benjamin Herts, sons of a prominent antiques dealer and auctioneer, established Herts Brothers in 1872 on Broadway near Eighteenth Street. Similar to George A. Schastey & Co., Herts Brothers designed entire harmonized interiors and architectural woodwork, in addition to individual pieces of furniture. Made for display, this cabinet is in a classicizing mode with fluted pilasters and ionic capitals on both the top and bottom sections. It exhibits a lavish use of mother-of-pearl and metals on rosewood, which speaks to the opulent interior for which it was probably designed. These materials also appear in the most important commissions by Schastey and Herter Brothers.
