The Preacher

Thomas Hart Benton American

Not on view

This sketch is one of dozens of drawings that Benton used to compose his mural America Today, also in the Museum’s collection (2012.478a–j). In the midst of the tawdry entertainment in the City Activities with Subway mural panel, a preacher warns against the unrestrained pleasures of the flesh. In spite of his placement perilously close to the scantily clad dancer behind him, the evangelical soapbox speaker, who is based on this sketch, implores the faithful to avoid such temptations.
