Strainer

New Kingdom, Ramesside

Not on view

This fragment of a shallow strainer (see 30.8.369 for a complete example) once formed part of a drinking service. It would have been used to filter sediment from wine as it was poured from jugs, jars or flasks into bowls, goblets or situlas.

Wine services appear to have been introduced in the Ramesside Period, when wine-drinking became a feature of elite society. Most if not all of the vessels found at Tell Basta were presumably associated with a temple festival.
