Letter

Wang Duo Chinese

late Ming (1368–1644)–early Qing (1644–1911) dynasty

Not on view

This letter, written in Wang Duo's middle age, shows him still practicing the model style of Wang Xizhi (303–361). Wang's brush moves at different speeds, often slowing down to change direction and giving his well-articulated characters a sense of restrained energy that also recalls the writing of Mi Fu (1052–1107). The text describes Wang's impressions of an opera to a friend who was a composer.
