Vase

China

Qing dynasty (1644–1911), Kangxi period (1662–1722)

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 221

This vase features a garden scene of women enjoying fragrant flowers, burning incense, and playing with children. The rich colors, including the deep blue shade, were applied with polychromatic enamels over the glaze. Prior to the late seventeenth century, blue on porcelain was achieved through the use of cobalt under the glaze.
