Color supplements began to be a regular feature of the weekly newspaper "Illustrated London News" from the 1850s onwards. Here the depiction of the celebrated natural feature, straddling the border between the United States of America and Canada, focuses on the grandeur of the cascading water and the resulting mass of spray. It was published to coincide with the North American trip in 1860 of Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). The color lithograph was based on a watercolour by Andrews "taken on the spot" as the lettering below the image indicates. Andrews had another one of his views of the Niagara Falls published as a color supplement by the same newspaper on October 27, 1860.
