Golden light catching on hill side of / fine country with Rembrandt [gradation?] / & emphasis of woody hill in shade [of?] / itself material for picture / Very light relatively to shade / Very full of rich golden color / & velvety & real in texture".
below image: "1st day at Hartland - in valley towards Abbey / In wooded glens the most brilliant sunsine [sic] / is very beautiful - And where the effect / and arrangement are very vivid one sees / on half closing the eyes that the light / is in detached shapes or patches - / ______ / I am equally impressed by the vividness / of light & vividness of color - / These imply that the shadows must / be struck on an intensely deep key - / & then one must get their clearness -"
