Head of a Lion

Persian Period or later

Not on view

Head of a lion broken at its neck. Its open mouth and the rendering of its mane differ it from most depictions of lions in ancient Egypt, and the two broken sections at the top of its head suggest it might have been horned—similar to the image of lions in Achaemenid rhytons. The production of such objects seems to have continued even after the Achaemenid Period.
