In 1962 James H. Meredith, a twenty-eight year old African-American air force veteran, applied to be admitted to the University of Mississippi. When he arrived at the school with court papers and a federal official for admission, students and segregationists carried out a night of violence that left two dead and many wounded. The police, identifiable by their white armbands, backed the Governor in initially denying Meredith admission and ignored the rioting that followed.
