Cunningham’s friend, Clare Shephard, embodies the blowing of the wind by gracefully extending her arm through layers of transparent fabric. The platinum print, soft focus, and allegorical subject reveal the artist’s early interest in Pictorialism, a movement that sought to define photography as a fine art. Later in her career, Cunningham rejected this style in favor of straight photography, which emphasized sharp focus and eschewed the manipulation of negatives or prints.
