Terracotta phiale (libation bowl)

Greek, Attic

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 154

This type of shallow bowl with a central knob to aid in handling was used to pour liquid offerings to the gods. At a symposium (drinking party), the first wine from every newly filled krater was dipped out in a phiale and offered to the gods.
