Terracotta statuette of a woman shaping a loaf

Greek, Boeotian

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 157

This is one of a large group of figurines of women variously engaged in preparing food. They were produced in Boeotia during the fifth century B.C. Here a woman leans over a square trough and works a mass of dough into a flat loaf. A dog or pig lies at the base.
